Hello, Dolly! was first performed at the St James Theatre in New York City, opening on January 16, 1964 with Carol Channing in the title role of Dolly Levi. The show ran for 2,844 performances and won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In 1969 Gene kelly directed the movie version starring Barbara Streisand.
